Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Deresinski received his medical degree from the University of Illinois, where he also completed two years of training in Internal Medicine. After interruption of training by the U.S. Army (who insisted on his services in VietNam), he completed his Internal Medicine residency at Stanford University, where he received three years of training in Infectious Diseases. He received the “Certificate of Knowledge” in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers Health from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Dr. Deresinski established the not-for-profit AIDS Community Research Consortium in Redwood City, California. He was Medical Director of AIDS services for Santa Clara County, California and head of the Division of AIDS Medicine at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Dr. Deresinski, along with Dr. Robert Wehbie, was one of the first Trainers for the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa, helping to initiate that program in Kampala. Dr. Deresinski is Editor as well as major contributor to Infectious Disease Alert. He has served as a reviewer for a number of journals and is currently a Section Editor for Clinical Infectious Disease, for which he writes “In the Literature”. He is currently chairman of the Guidelines Committee of the Infectious Disease Society of America. His interests in clinical infectious diseases are broad, as reflected in his contributions to this newsletter, as well as his many and varied publications in the medical literature. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards in Infectious Disease from Stanford University. He has previously been active in clinical and laboratory research in the areas of fungal and mycobacterial infections and participated in approximately 100 clinical trials of HIV disease. Dr. Deresinski’s multiple current activities provide him with extensive experience in the worlds of academic medicine, medical care in a public hospital, and private practice.
