Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Marc Struelens, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Struelens completed his medical degree from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in 1980. After obtaining a Diploma of Tropical Medicine at Prince Léopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, he worked for 3 years as Research Associate at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh. He then returned to Brussels where he specialised at ULB Erasme Hospital and was later appointed Assistant then Associate Professor in Clinical Pathology and Hospital infection Control. He obtained a PhD in Microbiology at the same university with a thesis on the molecular epidemiology of nosocomial infections. He is currently Professor of Medical Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the ULB, Director of the Department of Microbiology, Erasme Hospital, and Head of the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Unit, School of Public Health, ULB and the national reference laboratory for MRSA. He has published over 220 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters and served as editor for international journals including Current Opinion in Infectious Diseases, Future Microbiology, Microbial Drug Resistance, Clinical Microbiology and Infection, Infection, Journal of Medical Microbiology, Reviews in Medical Microbiology, Infection Genetics and Evolution and Journal of Microbiological Methods. He is a member of several national and international advisory boards and EU-supported research networks in the fields of microbiology, hospital infection and antimicrobial resistance. He has served as Scientific Officer and President for the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and chaired the European Study Group on Epidemiological Markers, the Belgian Infection Control Society and the Belgian Infectious Disease Advisory Board
