Biographical Sketch:
DR. SAMUEL PONCE DE LEON R. Doctor Samuel Ponce de León R, MD was born in Mexico City. He studied Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He studied a specialty in Internal Medicine and in Infectology at the National Institute for Nutrition (SZ UNAM-SSA). Later on, he got his master degree in Sciences in Hospitalary Epidemiology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA. From 1991 through 2007 he has occupied different Academic and Administrative positions with activities focused in clinic and in research. From 1991-1992 he was Director of the National Program for Prevention and Control of AIDS in Mexico. He belongs to the National Researchers System Level III. He has received 20 national and international awards. He has given more than 500 national and international conferences. He has published more than 300 works (manuals, articles in magazines and medical books). He has participated in 14 Editorial Committees. He has been quoted more than 750 times for his scientific works. He is an important member of the Nosocomial Infections of the International Society of Infectious Diseases; professor at the UNAM’s School of Medicine, consultant at PAHO on nosocomial infections. Dr. Ponce de Leon has been president of the Mexican Infectology and Clinical Microbiology Association (AMIMC), president of the Infectology Council and of the Mexican Association for the study of Nosocomial Infections (AMEIN). He is also member of several national and international scientific Societies. He is currently an consultant of the General Direction of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health and representative of the government in the Safety Council at WHO. Dr. Samuel Ponce de León is the General Director of Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México, S.A. de C.V., a government-owned company of the Ministry of Health.
