Summary: Evidence-based interventions are critical to effective prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections. This symposium will outline critical information gaps in the epidemiology and pathophysiology of HAIs, and recommendations for closing them. Special attention will be paid to antibiotic resistance among the ESKAPE bacteria.
Learning Objectives: - Discuss existing gaps in knowledge in basic epidemiology and pathophysiology of HAIs.
- Describe current progress and future challenges in the development of a research plan to combat nosocomial infections caused by ESKAPE pathogens —Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella species, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species.
- Discuss the European approach to infection prevention research.
- Discuss how to conduct studies that might help optimize the implementation of infection control interventions that are known to be effective.
