Summary: The world was taken by surprise with the emergence of a novel strain of influenza that rapidly progressed to a pandemic. This session will explore the evolution of the pandemic, as well as the impact of this new strain and the challenges posed to public health, healthcare providers in various settings, and the vaccine industry.
Learning Objectives: - Describe the series of events and the epidemiology of the novel H1N1 influenza A outbreak in Mexico.
- Discuss the evolution of the novel influenza A pandemic as it progressed through out the US and around the world.
- Review the experiences among infection preventionists in US healthcare settings during the first few months of the outbreak.
- Discuss the challenges of development, distribution, and administration of a new vaccine in response to the pandemic.
