Summary: This symposium will review challenging issues in occupational health in healthcare facilities. Faculty will review the forthcoming SHEA guideline, as well as discuss how to manage influenza in healthcare workers including pre- and post-exposure prevention using vaccine and antivirals. Faculty will review whether to abandon the use of TST in favor of the newer interferon-gamma release assays.
Learning Objectives: - Review the forthcoming SHEA Guideline on the Management of the HIV, HBV, or HCV Infected Healthcare Worker.
- Compare the sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility and cost of TST versus an interferon gamma release assay for the diagnosis of LTBI in healthcare workers.
- Review the management of the disruptive healthcare worker.
- Outline the methods to implement and evaluate more robust programs to improve influenza vaccination in healthcare workers.
