Biographical Sketch: Abhay Bang, MD, MPH studied medicine in India and public health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, US. He and his wife Dr. Rani Bang founded a voluntary organization SEARCH (Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health) in a remote, poor district Gadchiroli in India where they live for the past 25 years, provide health care to people and conduct research. He developed the well known Home-based Newborn Care approach which has received global attention. He and his organization were awarded by the Government of Maharashtra, Govt. of India, The MacArthur Foundation, Save the Children US, and several others. He and Rani were selected as the Global Heroes of Health by the TIME magazine in 2005.
