Biographical Sketch:
Oxford University BA BM BCh. London University, MSc (Public Health.) MSc (Epidemiology & Statistics); Dip.Bact. 2009 Former Head of Department of Healthcare-associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance in the Centre for Infections (Health Protection Agency. Lead epidemiologist for the development of web enabled mandatory surveillance of MRSA bacteraemia and C.difficile. Visiting Professor in the faculty of Advanced Computational Biology in Maryland University (USA) following appointments in the departments of Microbiology (1984) and the Biotechnology Institute (1994). Preclinical study was in Physiology, Biochemistry and the Sir William Dunn school of Pathology at Oxford University (Jesus College 1961-5), before taking up a place at the London Hospital Medical College. House appointments in Professorial Units of Medicine and Surgery at the London Hospital. Investigated the epidemiology of tularemia in Scandinavia. Postgraduate degrees: London University Diploma in Bacteriology (1974); MSc in epidemiology and statistics at the London School of Tropical Medicine (MSc.1987), MSc in public health from London University in 1996 (St.George’s Hospital Medical School Course). Work experience in hospital infection control and information technology was gained through appointments during 30 years of practice in the English NHS and several overseas work secondments: • Director of the Southampton Area Public Health Laboratory and Infection Control Officer (1978-1984). • Led team to investigate the raised incidence of orthopaedic surgical site infection. • Investigated the sources and routes of transmission of community acquired Campylobacter infection • managed multidisciplinary infection control teams in Southampton (1978-84) and Guy’s and St.Thomas’ Trust (1991-95). • Investigated the occurrence of viable non-culturable bacteria as a source of waterborne transmission of campylobacter and legionella • Principal investigator for an outbreak of multi-drug resistant E.coli infection in London • Consultant in Communicable Disease Control (CCDC) for Lambeth (1990 to 1995) and Clinical Director for Infection Control at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals (1992-96)
