I am medically qualified with an MB BS degree from Kings College London and St Georges’ Hospital University of London in 1977. Since becoming a consultant, I have become interested in Health Care Associated Infection. I have been involved with national initiatives in development of this area. I have worked with the Health Care Commission and the Care Quality Commission. To support this role, I have gained the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health Certificate (with distinction) and the Diploma of Hospital Infection Control. I currently teach on a training course for this Diploma and serve on the examination committee I have contributed to the infection prevention and control medical literature, including a quality improvement paper in the British Medical Journal on Meticillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). I was on the national enquiry team and am one of the authors of the Health Care Commissions’ report on Clostridium difficile at Maidstone Hospital. I have been Director of Infection Prevention and Control in Mid-Essex Hospitals NHS Trust since 2006. This role requires me to understand the national guidance on Health Care Associated Infection, including the Health and Social Care Act 2008. Since 2007, I have been infection control doctor for Mid Essex Primary Care Trust. In this role, I have gained experience in the requirements of infection prevention and control systems outside the hospital environment. I am a member of the East of England Health Care Associated Infection task force group. I am infection prevention representative on the British Infection Associations’ Clinical Services Committee. As a Clinical Microbiologist, on a day to day basis, I see patients with infection and advise on management, both in hospital and the community. I have evening and weekend clinical on-call responsibilities on a 1 in 2 basis.
