Biographical Sketch:
I graduated with MB.BS from Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. I obtained Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from NUS and went on to do Infectious Diseases training. I spent two years at the Mayo Clinic, returned to Singapore General Hospital as one of two ID physicians then and one of the first in the country.. I joined the Communicable Diseases Centre, and Department of Infectious Diseases, Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 1996, and am Senior Consultant in this department, managing patients with infectious diseases in inpatient as well as outpatient clinics. I am Senior Clinical Lecturer with the National University of Singapore, and teach medical students as well as residents. I have been Chairman of the Infection Control Committee and head of the Infection Control Unit from 1996. My interests in general Infectious Diseases are in melioidosis, fungal and mycobacterial infections. I am also part of the hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and with my team have developed electronic antimicrobial resistance surveillance as well as infection control surveillance systems. I am also part of hospital Disaster Response and Emergency Response Team. As an ID physician, and Infection Control Chair, I have worked with my department and Infection Control Unit through 4 outbreaks of new diseases – Nipah, SARS, Chikungunya, H1N1.For my work during the SARS outbreak, I received the National Day Awards Medal of Valour and the Courage Medal in 2003
