Summary: SSI surveillance data have long been used by hospitals to guide their internal quality improvement efforts. More recent uses of the data include state-mandated reporting, prevention collaborations, and pay-for-reporting schemes. We will explore how these uses of the data, changing surgical practice, and the expansion of NHSN use have served as drivers for revisions to the NHSN SSI surveillance protocol. In addition, advances in the analysis of NHSN SSI data—procedure-specific multivariable models and standardized infection ratio—will be discussed. The session will also include the opportunity to apply SSI criteria to example case scenarios.
Learning Objectives: - Apply SSI criteria to case scenarios
- Describe advances in analysis of SSI data
- Identify the drivers of NHSN SSI surveillance revisions
