Summary: This session will describe several important infections that are relevant to those in pediatric infection prevention in both free standing children’s hospitals and in pediatric units in a general hospital This includes peripartum infectious agents relevant to the neonate, NICU infection prevention and control guidelines, respiratory tract viruses, and tuberculosis or pediatric peritoneal dialysis infections. Examples of prevention tactics, planning and use of diagnostic test will be used to illustrate key points.
Learning Objectives: - Analyze the epidemiology of key pathogens on a peripartum clinical unit
- Explain the significance and principles investigation of a single case of postpartum GAS endometritis or wound infections
- Identify effective strategies for collaboration with obstetricians to prevent neonatal infections
- Assess the impact of physical space and staffing levels in the NICU on HAI
- Summarize isolation and other preventive strategies in the NICU for MRSA, VRE, Candida, RSV, influenza, enteroviruses
- Justify the role of contact vaccinations and visitor restriction policies in the NICU
- Plan how to integrate NICU infection prevention into a general hospital infection prevention plan
- Determine the epidemiology of respiratory tract viruses detected by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
- Illustrate when to use PCR test results for discontinuation of contact precautions
- Develop testing algorithms for respiratory viruses
- Summarize the epidemiology of TB in children in the U.S.
