Summary: This symposium will review recent advances in the identification of biomarkers of infection, microbiologic methods for direct detection of bacteria and fungi in clinical specimens, and new material science technologies designed to prevent development of biofilms on invasive devices. The session will also review the potential impact of these advances on healthcare epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship and offer practice strategies for critical assessment and application of new technologies to practice.
